Tofu for people who hate tofu

I’m no vegetarian and I do love my meat. I am highly particular about my meat though – we only eat grass fed, organic and free range animal products.  My family does eat vegetarian a few times per week for both budget and health reasons as well as variety and vegetarian is fast eats in a busy household. I guess you could call me a flexitarian but I’ve never really been one for labels. That means I would fit inside a box and I try to think outside of the box and never colour inside the lines. Where would Monet or Picasso be if they stayed inside the lines?  Today is meatless Monday in our house and this is a favourite Tofu recipe that originally came from Moosewood Restaurant.  My whole family really enjoys this tofu – and that is coming from people who HATE tofu!  The best part of this recipe is that you can decide whether you want to cook it in 5 minutes or 30 minutes depending on how rushed your weeknights are with kids programs, sports, homework, going to the gym, or whatever you have to do 🙂

Tofu for People Who Hate Tofu

Servings: 4-5 depending on the size of servings.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz firm or extra firm organic tofu
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil EVOO
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil I really like Eden Organic toasted sesame oil for this recipe
  • 3 tbsp Bragg’s liquid soy seasoning liquid aminos
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 1 clove of garlic pressed in a garlic press

Instructions

  • Remove the tofu from the package and drain between paper towels, changing the towels as necessary until tofu is mostly dry. Cut tofu into bite sized cubes and place in a container. Place all other ingredients in the same container, close tightly and shake to combine and coat the tofu. Place in fridge for at least 24 hours or up to 3 days (the longer the better I think).
  • Got only 5 minutes?
  • On the stovetop add the tofu and any remaining marinade to a large skillet. Sautee stirring oftern for 4-5 minutes until golden on all sides.
  • Got at least 30 minutes?
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the tofu and any remaining marinade in a baking dish large enough to hold the tofu in a single layer. Bake uncovered stirring once or twice until the toful is firm and chewy (approximately 30-40 minutes).

Notes

This dish can be served hot or cold – it can be eaten on its own as a main entree, or added to salad and vegetable dishes. I bet you didn’t know tofu could taste this good 🙂
